This phone is all about the battery life. The specs are a laughable 48 days (just like iPhone 5 say it lasts 9 days when in reality people get 1). On my Nokia Asha 501 (using T-Mobile) I got 3 full days using internet, downloading apps, wi-fi and bluetooth on and a call time of about 30 minutes before getting the battery low warning. Then I turned wi-fi and bluetooth off and with 30 minutes talk time I got a respectable 6.5 days before battery low warning. This battery performance is about identical to my old Nokia C3 but this phone has advantages over it (such as bigger number keys for dialing - the C3 had tiny keys like a Blackberry).
I thought text messaging would be a problem with such a small screen but it works better than I expected. In portrait mode keyboard you can expect more errors than in landscape but with practice it gets very usable.
The call quality is good in quiet environments but I find it doesn't filter noise very well. You may have more problem than usual having a conversation if music is playing in the background or you are in a crowd of noisy people.
The camera takes grainy off-color pictures that is good enough for taking funny throw away pictures or documenting a car wreck for insurance but it really isn't good enough for photos you want to keep.
This really isn't an apps phone. About half the apps I tried didn't work and the other half weren't that useful (and the selection is very limited). The calendar doesn't sync with gmail calendar and the battery check goes down in 25% increments. Emails thru gmail work and there was a nice weather channel app that works well. Internet works but with a tiny screen it would be for emergencies only.Read more ›

I've been searching a long time for a phone that has wifi but doesn't require a data plan. These days everyone has a smartphone and cell phone service companies are totally milking it by requiring all smart phones to have a data plan. There's already wifi hotspots everywhere so mobile data isn't something I'd want to make my parents pay for. However, I was getting sick of my old Z431 that didn't even have proper typing. The Nokia Asha 501 provided me with everything I was looking for: good calls, threaded text messaging, expandable memory, good music player, wifi and internet browser, and camera and many more pluses.
There are still small improvements that Nokia could make to the OS but so far so great. Here's a forum with a bunch of suggestions by users: http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Asha-and-other-Nokia-Series-30/Asha-501-Problems-Compiled-HERE/m-p/2326115#M105690
Calling The phone user interface looks really nice and straightforward. Call quality is great and the range of volume is also nice, from very loud to very quiet. The color of the volume level changes depending on what you're doing. For general sounds such as ringtones it is blue. For the volume of the music player or music in games it is pink. For the volume level of calls it turns green. It's a subtle but nice feature.
Texting The great thing about texting is that it has threaded messages. If you don't know what that is, threaded texting is basically one conversation of a bunch of messages made to look like an IM conversation. iPhones and Androids use threaded text messaging. Other phones require you to see single messages one at a time, even if they are all from the same person. The texting is easy. The keyboard takes some time to get used to.Read more ›
